Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
In a large pot, bring water to a rolling boil. Cook the lasagna noodles according to the package instructions until al dente. Once cooked, drain the noodles and set aside to cool slightly.
In a large skillet, heat 1 tablespoon of cooking oil over medium heat. Add the ground beef (or turkey) and cook, stirring frequently, until the meat is browned and cooked through, about 5-7 minutes. Season the meat with a sprinkle of salt, freshly ground black pepper, and the dried Italian herbs for added flavor.
When the meat is fully cooked, pour the marinara sauce into the skillet. Stir well and reduce the heat to a simmer, allowing the sauce to thicken slightly for about 5 minutes.
While the sauce is simmering, prepare the ricotta mixture. In a medium mixing bowl, combine the ricotta cheese, the egg, half of the grated Parmesan cheese, and a pinch of salt and pepper. Stir until the mixture is smooth and well blended.
In a large baking dish, spread a thin layer of the meat sauce on the bottom to prevent sticking. Arrange a layer of lasagna noodles over the sauce, slightly overlapping them if needed.
Take half of the ricotta mixture and spread it evenly over the layer of noodles. Top this with a generous layer of meat sauce, followed by a layer of shredded mozzarella cheese.
Repeat the layering process: add another layer of noodles followed by the remaining ricotta mixture, more meat sauce, and another layer of mozzarella. Continue this pattern until all ingredients are used, reserving a final layer of noodles topped with the remaining marinara sauce, mozzarella, and the rest of the Parmesan cheese.
Cover the baking dish with aluminum foil, making sure it does not touch the cheese. Place the dish in the preheated oven and bake for 25 minutes.
After 25 minutes, carefully remove the foil and bake for an additional 15-20 minutes, or until the cheese is bubbly and golden brown.
Once out of the oven, allow the lasagna to cool for approximately 10 minutes before slicing. This cooling period helps the layers set, making it easier to serve.
For an extra touch, garnish with fresh basil leaves before serving. Enjoy your delicious homemade cheesy delight lasagna!
